Nicola Post & Rail Ltd is a family-owned company that has been operating in Merritt, BC, since 1998. The company produces and delivers premium wood post products to wholesale dealers across Canada and the US. Nicola Post & Rail specializes in manufacturing fence posts for local farms and ranches and also offers a wide range of round wood post products, primarily for agricultural use. It has been a leader in producing round wood fencing products in the interior of British Columbia and supplies products to several wholesale dealers in North America. We are looking for four full-time woodworking machine operators to join our team.

FULL JOB DESCRIPTION

Woodworking machine operators set up, program, and operate one or more woodworking machines to make or fix wooden parts for furniture, fixtures, or other wood products. They work in furniture, fixtures, and other wood product manufacturing plants.

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

· Woodworking machines such as saws, moulders, lathes, routers, planers, edgers, pressing machines, shapers, drills, and sanders to fabricate or repair wooden parts for furniture, fixtures, and other wood products.

· Feed conveyors, hoppers, saws, and drying machines

·  Sort, pile, and transport wood products

·  Remove scrap lumber and wood chips for reprocessing using a forklift or other powered equipment.

·  Operate gluing machines to glue pieces of wood together or press and affix wood veneer to wood surfaces.

·   Assist other processing workers to operate, maintain and repair various machines and equipment and carry out other wood processing.

·   Clean machines and immediate work areas using shovels, hoses, and other tools.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

·  No degree, certificate, or diploma required.

·  Basic English level

·  With less than 2 years of work Experience, it will be an asset but not require as we will train.

 JOB DETAILS:

·  Employer: Nicola Post & Rail

·  Location: Quilchena, BC.

·  Terms of Employment: Full-Time, Long-Term.

·  Hours of work: 40 hours per week.

·  Schedule: Mondays through Fridays from 6 am to 2:30 pm (times change periodically due to weather conditions. Flexibility to work overtime, evenings, and/or weekends, if required.

·  Wages: $23.00 per hour (as per median wage).

·  Overtime: One and one-half times the regular wage rate as per provincial regulations

BENEFITS: 

·  The employer covers insurance from Workplace Safety.

·  4% of earnings are paid out every payday of vacation as per provincial regulations.

·  The employer will be covering the rent for 1 month. After one month, the employee will be responsible for their own rent and living expenses.

Key Responsibilities

As an Excavation Labourer, you will perform a range of physically demanding and essential tasks, focusing on general excavation duties and supporting shotcrete shoring operations.

General Excavation Duties

  • Operate hand and power tools such as shovels, jackhammers, and compactors.
  • Assist with digging, trenching, and grading.
  • Remove debris, rocks, and excess soil from work areas.
  • Support heavy equipment operators (e.g., excavators, backhoes) under supervision.
  • Set up barricades, fencing, and safety structures.
  • Backfill trenches and compact earth.
  • Load and unload construction materials and tools.

Shotcrete Shoring Responsibilities

  • Assist with setup of rebar, wire mesh, and reinforcement.
  • Prepare and handle hoses, compressors, and other shotcrete equipment.
  • Mix and load shotcrete materials according to specifications.
  • Apply shotcrete layers to excavation walls or slopes (under supervision or if certified).
  • Ensure proper curing and finishing of applied shotcrete.
  • Clean and prepare surfaces for adhesion.
  • Maintain safe distances and communication during spraying.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all site safety protocols and wear required PPE (hard hat, gloves, steel-toed boots, etc.).
  • Report hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor.
  • Assist in securing trenches and excavation walls to prevent cave-ins.
  • Participate in daily toolbox talks and follow instructions from foremen and engineers.
  • Keep the worksite clean, organized, and free of hazards.

 

Requirements

  • Education: Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: 2 years to less than 3 years of experience specifically within the excavation & shoring industry is required.
  • Physical Expectations: Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and prolonged standing, and work in varying weather conditions and confined spaces when necessary.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with other trades and labourers to meet project deadlines.
