Cook: $17.50/hr 

Cooks prepare and cook a wide variety of foods. They are employed in restaurants, hotels, hospitals and other health care institutions, central food commissaries, educational institutions and other establishments. They are also employed aboard ships and at construction and logging campsites. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Job duties

  • Prepare and cook complete meals or individual dishes and foods
  • Schedule and supervise kitchen helpers
  • Oversee kitchen operations
  • Maintain inventory and records of food, supplies and equipment
  • May clean kitchen and work area
  • May plan menus, determine size of food portions, estimate food requirements and costs, and monitor and order supplies
  • May train kitchen staff.

Additional Skills

  • Maintain records of food costs, consumption, sales and inventory.
  • Demonstrate new cooking techniques and new equipment to cooking staff.
  • Supervise activities of specialized cooks and other kitchen workers.
  • Roast, fry, stream, grill meats, vegetables according to recipe
  • Quality checks all plates and ensure all the dishes maintain a hot temperature
  • Participate in the planning and creation of restaurant menu and provide useful input on special occasions’ menu and estimate food costing
  • Cook halal meat and authentic Indian curries with their authentic taste
  • Ensure the cleanliness of kitchen utensils before cooking
  • Train staff in preparation, cooking and handling of food
  • Suggest improvement in menu and dishes
  • Ensure appropriate health and safety standards, food safe practices
